India as a Peace Catalyst: Bridging Iran-US Tensions

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday proposed India as a possible mediator in the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the United States, citing New Delhi's extensive diplomatic experience and global reputation. Lavrov highlighted Pakistan's role in facilitating immediate dialogue between Tehran and Washington but emphasized India's importance in broader initiatives to ensure long-term regional stability.

During a media briefing, Lavrov remarked, "Pakistan is helping to establish a dialogue between the US and Iran to address urgent issues. For a long-term mediator between Iran and its Arab allies, India, with its vast diplomatic experience, could be suitable." This statement followed a BRICS Foreign Ministers meeting, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the UAE.

The Russian diplomat's visit comes amid growing global tensions over the Iran conflict and the looming expiration of US sanctions waivers on Russian and Iranian oil. At the briefing, Lavrov emphasized India's role as the current BRICS chair and a significant energy consumer, suggesting that it could unite major stakeholders to engage in dialogue and avoid hostilities.

"As BRICS president, India is directly interested in receiving oil from the region and could facilitate discussions, inviting Iran and the UAE to agree on ways to prevent hostilities," Lavrov stated. He also accused certain nations of trying to escalate enmity between Iran and Arab countries, asserting that Moscow is striving to decrease tensions.

Lavrov criticized some countries for fostering aggression against Iran, suggesting it aims to antagonize Iran and its Arab neighbors. He stressed Russia's commitment to diplomacy and regional engagement to prevent further Middle Eastern conflict escalation.

Since independence, India has evolved from idealistic, non-aligned mediation to a pragmatic approach, playing roles in past conflicts such as the Korean and Vietnam Wars. India's strategy combines moral diplomacy with high-level communication, reinforcing its ability as a peace facilitator. Notably, it helped broker the 1953 Korean armistice and chaired the ICSC in Vietnam, contributing to regional stability.

India's role in peace processes, such as the Austrian neutrality declaration in 1955, the Suez Canal Crisis, and the Iraq-Iran War, highlights its peacekeeping legacy. Under its G20 presidency, India has addressed developmental impacts from conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war, advocating for dialogue and peaceful resolutions, driven by the philosophy that 'the whole world is one family.'
