India's External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, has made a strong case for the expansion of the UN Security Council, signaling that reform is crucial for maintaining the effectiveness and credibility of global governance. Jaishankar's remarks came during the BRICS foreign ministers' conclave in New Delhi on Friday.
The minister highlighted the need for global bodies to reflect the interconnected and multipolar nature of the current world. He criticized the outdated structures of global governance, calling for urgent negotiations to ensure reforms. Jaishankar stressed that increased representation from Asia, Africa, and Latin America is vital for a credible UN.
He also addressed the necessity to reform the international financial architecture and strengthen the multilateral trading system to meet contemporary challenges like supply chain vulnerabilities and inequalities. Jaishankar underscored the role of the World Trade Organization in establishing a fair, open, and inclusive trading system worldwide.
