On Wednesday, the European Union made an urgent appeal for Israel to immediately lift the blockade on Gaza, emphasizing the critical need for humanitarian aid in the region. The call also raised alarms over Israel's newly proposed aid delivery mechanism.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, along with Crisis Management Commissioner Hadja Lahbib and Mediterranean Commissioner Dubravka Suica, reiterated Israel's legal obligations to ensure aid reaches those in need, in accordance with international law. Their joint statement also advocated for a ceasefire and the release of hostages.
The EU criticized the new system, approved by Israel on May 4, for delegating aid distribution to non-humanitarian actors and private security firms. The approach has faced backlash from the U.N. and various aid organizations, which argue that it undermines fundamental humanitarian principles.
