Amid heightened tensions following military actions in Pakistan, Manipur authorities conducted 'Operation Abhyas,' a series of civil defence mock drills in four districts. Initiated by the Ministry of Home Affairs, these exercises address fresh security concerns post the tragic Pahalgam attack, which resulted in 26 civilian deaths.
In Imphal, extensive mock drills were held at various locations, including Johnstone Higher Secondary School and BT Park. According to Imphal West Deputy Commissioner Raj Kumar Mayanglambam, the drills simulated air raids, emphasizing readiness and response strategies. Volunteers and officials, including the National and State Disaster Response Forces, enacted rescue operations.
Senior civil defence instructor Phurailatpam Hemolata Devi noted that civilians were trained on protective measures during air raids, with scenarios including camouflaging strategies. The operation also featured emergency medical setups, civilian evacuations, and vital defence training. Similar exercises occurred in Bishnupur, Churachandpur, and Ukhrul districts, ensuring community involvement and preparedness for emergencies.
