Denmark is set to summon the senior US diplomat in the country for clarification after a Wall Street Journal report alleged that the United States is boosting intelligence activities in Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish region coveted by former President Donald Trump.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen announced Wednesday, during a meeting in Poland, that Denmark would summon the US charge d'affaires to acquire either a rebuttal or further explanation following the report. This comes as Rasmussen expressed unease over the intelligence gathering, emphasizing that "friends should not spy on each other."
The US Embassy, contacted by The Associated Press, has not yet responded to inquiries about whether the US diplomat in Copenhagen, Jennifer Hall Godfrey, has been summoned. Meanwhile, the Danish Foreign Ministry only referred back to Rasmussen's remarks, maintaining a serious stance on the situation.
