In a concerning uptick of maritime crime, six incidents of sea robbery were reported within the eastbound lane of the Traffic Separation Scheme in the Singapore Strait's Phillip Channel from May 2 to May 7, according to officials.

The Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) disclosed that these incidents predominantly targeted bulk carriers and tankers. Of the six reported incidents, engine spares were stolen in two cases, while no items were taken in the other four. Fortunately, all crew members remained unharmed during these events.

The frequency of such incidents has raised alarms, with a total of 50 occurrences documented in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore since the start of 2025. ReCAAP ISC has called on littoral states to bolster their maritime patrols, enhance surveillance, and improve communication and information sharing to apprehend and deter these criminal activities. The agency also advises heightened vigilance among ships, particularly during nighttime transits.
