Ukraine's Security Service on Friday announced the arrest of two former Ukrainian military members suspected of spying for Hungary. The arrests mark a first in Ukrainian history, with accusations that the individuals gathered military intelligence in the western Zakarpattia region.
The Zakarpattia area, bordering Hungary, has a significant Hungarian ethnic minority, fueling tensions between Budapest and Kyiv over minority rights. Hungary, under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, has adopted a contentious stance since Russia's 2022 invasion, withholding military support and EU financial aid to Ukraine.
The suspects were allegedly directed by Hungary's military intelligence to spy and recruit others, while equipped with covert communication devices. The Hungarian Defense Ministry has yet to comment on these allegations.
