Rebel Orders Halt in Congo Gold Mining Operations

Twangiza Mining, operating in the conflict-stricken South Kivu Province of eastern DR Congo, has been compelled to cease operations following an order from the region's rebel administration.

As detailed in a company-wide letter dispatched on May 8, General Director Chao Xianfeng confirmed the suspension due to directives from new authorities, urging the company to place its machinery and vehicles on standby.

Amidst this unstable landscape, Governor Manu Birato, an M23 appointee, insisted on compliance with new tax laws, revealing Twangiza had previously not paid taxes, which has further complicated the operational trajectory for this joint venture with stakes held in Hong Kong and China.
