Contested Closure: France's Crackdown on Palestinian Rights Group
A French pro-Palestinian protest group challenges a government decision to shut it down, claiming political motives and false arguments. The group, Urgence Palestine, argues the move is part of a wider repression of pro-Palestinian activism. The French government cites security concerns for the shutdown.

A French pro-Palestinian group, Urgence Palestine, is disputing a government order to shut it down, labeling the move as politically driven and based on "false" premises, amid broader state actions against Palestinian rights advocacy.
The organization, formed in 2023 in response to Israel's military actions in Gaza, defended itself on Thursday against claims of inciting violence, asserted by French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau. The decision, outlined in an April letter to the group's founder, Omar Alsoumi, alleges links to violent acts against the Jewish community and support for armed conflict.
Alsoumi stated the closure reflects the government's partial stance on the conflict, emphasizing the group's opposition to equating Jewish individuals with the Israeli state and affirming Palestinians' right to resist occupation. As violence in the Israel-Palestinian conflict escalates, the action has sparked debate over the balance between security policies and civil rights.
