UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued a strong appeal to member nations, urging them to meet their financial commitments to the UN's peacekeeping operations. At a German-hosted conference, Guterres emphasized the critical role of these operations in maintaining global peace and security, despite a significant budget reduction of 8.2% this fiscal year.
Highlighting that the peacekeeping budget only represents a small fraction of global military expenditures, Guterres warned of severe liquidity issues facing these operations. He stressed the 'absolute necessity' for all member states to fulfill their financial obligations in full and on time to prevent further strain on the system.
The call comes amid broader funding challenges, particularly following aid cuts from the US under the Trump administration. Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated his country's readiness to offer additional resources while advocating for more efficient and focused peacekeeping missions.
