Four minor boys, part of the group of 10 accused in the gangrape of a college student at Odisha's Gopalpur sea beach, underwent a medical test to confirm their ages, according to police statements. This ossification test comes as the Juvenile Justice Board considers trying the minors as adults.
The police transported the minors to the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at MKCG Medical College for the procedure, which employs X-rays to ascertain age, as explained by Prof Sudeepa Das, head of the department. Blood samples from all defendants and the victim were gathered for DNA testing.
Reflecting on the incident's severity, Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M emphasized the need for adult prosecution under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015. With the older suspects denied bail and jailed, the minors are in correctional homes. Investigations continue amid national outcry, led by the CID.
