The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has formally addressed the Andhra Pradesh government and state's police chief regarding troubling reports of a woman being brutally punished in public. This reportedly occurred after her husband defaulted on a loan in Chittoor district.
The NHRC's statement, reacting to a media account, highlights potential human rights violations. The incident, allegedly occurring on June 16 in Narayanapuram village, involved the woman being tied to a tree and assaulted by a moneylender.
The rights body, noting villagers later intervened to free her, has demanded a detailed report within two weeks from the state's top officials. The couple reportedly owed Rs 80,000, and the woman's husband had fled, leaving her to manage the loans and support three children as a daily wage earner.
