Unity Against Terror: Remembering the Kanishka Tragedy

Union Minister Hardeep Puri made a poignant appeal for shutting down terrorist and separatist funding as he commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Air India Flight 182 bombing. The tragic event, which claimed 329 lives, was solemnly remembered during a ceremony at the Ahakista Memorial in Ireland.

The Air India 'Kanishka' Flight 182 exploded mid-flight over the Atlantic Ocean near Ireland on June 23, 1985, before reaching London's Heathrow Airport. Most victims were Canadians of Indian heritage. Among attendees at the memorial were Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin and Canada's Minister of Public Safety, Gary Anandasangaree, alongside other dignitaries.

Puri underscored the importance of international unity in combating terrorism and extremism. He acknowledged the Irish community's compassion and assistance following the tragedy, stressing that collective efforts are vital to prevent such atrocities in the future. A minute's silence marked the exact time of the historic explosion, followed by heartfelt tributes from families.
