The Kerala government has appointed Ravada A Chandrasekhar, a senior IPS officer, as the state's new police chief. The announcement follows a special cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and marks the retirement of the former chief, Shaik Darvesh Saheb.
Chandrasekhar, formerly with the Intelligence Bureau on central deputation, was selected from a pool of senior officers recommended by the Union Public Service Commission. He expressed his eagerness to bring his past experience in Kerala to the role, despite past controversies linked to a policing incident in Kannur in 1994.
The appointment has drawn criticisms, particularly from figures within the CPI(M), due to Chandrasekhar's association with a police firing incident in Koothuparamba, although accusations were dismissed by the High Court in 2012. Nonetheless, some officials argue the promotion relied on merit-based assessment.
