In a sweeping move against the opposition, Turkish authorities detained former Izmir Mayor Tunc Soyer and 120 officials over alleged corruption in the western city of Izmir, state-run Anadolu Agency reported on Tuesday.

The Republican People's Party (CHP) officials face charges related to purported rigging of municipality tenders and fraud, with the Izmir Public Prosecutor's Office issuing 157 arrest warrants.

These arrests come amid growing scrutiny on the CHP, as similar actions were taken against officials in Istanbul and elsewhere, including Istanbul's Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who was arrested in March, sparking major protests.
