Assam's political landscape is embroiled in controversy as the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) presses for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into alleged corruption under the Gorukhuti Multipurpose Agriculture Project. The AJP claims 90 Gir cows were improperly sold, including to the wife of a BJP minister and several members of parliament (MPs).
AJP President Lurinjyoti Gogoi sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging a large-scale misappropriation of funds and breach of public trust by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's administration. Gogoi emphasized the cultural and spiritual significance of cows in Indian society, framing the alleged acts as unethical and sacrilegious.
The controversy traces back to July 2021, when 300 Gir cows were procured from Gujarat for the Gorukhuti project. Discrepancies in statements by the Chief Minister and the project chairman have intensified suspicions among the public. An additional call for a forensic audit of financial records has been made to ensure transparency and accountability in the transaction and management of the cows.
