In an unprecedented turn of events, the removal process of Justice Yashwant Varma has gained momentum within the Indian Parliament. On Monday, lawmakers from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha took decisive steps by submitting formal notices to initiate the process.
The Rajya Sabha notice, bearing the signatures of 63 opposition members, represents a cross-party effort mirrored in the Lok Sabha, where 152 members, including Rahul Gandhi, appended their names. Following legislative procedure, both Houses are expected to greenlight the motions on Tuesday, setting the stage for the formation of an enquiry committee as stipulated by the Judges (Inquiry) Act.
Justice Varma's alleged misconduct involves involvement with currency notes discovered at his residence. A committee, comprising members recommended by the Chief Justice of India, will examine these charges. Despite Varma's denial, previous inquiries indicated serious misconduct. The forthcoming committee report will be pivotal for parliamentary debate and the final vote.
