Gita Gopinath, the second-ranking official at the International Monetary Fund, is set to resign from her position to return to an academic role at Harvard University by the end of August, as announced by the IMF on Monday.
The IMF's Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva, has indicated that a successor to Gopinath will be announced in due course.
Gopinath broke new ground when she joined the IMF in 2019 as the chief economist, marking the first time a woman held this position. She was later promoted to the first deputy managing director in January 2022.
