Brooklyn Activist Charged with Arson in NYPD Vehicle Fires
Jakhi McCray, 21, from Brooklyn, is charged with arson for allegedly setting fire to 11 NYPD vehicles. Surveillance footage captured him at the scene. Evidence found included a lighter and sunglasses with McCray’s fingerprints. His lawyer claims McCray is an activist; he’s in custody on a separate charge.

In a high-profile case, Jakhi McCray, a 21-year-old Brooklyn resident, has been charged with setting fire to 11 NYPD vehicles last month. The arson charges were filed in the US District Court, where McCray pleaded not guilty.
According to the unsealed criminal complaint, McCray was captured on surveillance video climbing a fence into a lot containing reserve NYPD vehicles. The incident occurred around 1 am on June 12, and a police officer arrived shortly after to find the vehicles engulfed in flames. The suspect was seen fleeing through a fence hole with evidence like a lighter and sunglasses left behind.
McCray's lawyer, Ron Kuby, described his client as an activist and noted that while McCray remains in custody, he faces separate misdemeanor charges. The case has drawn attention due to potential links with protests against the Trump administration's immigration policies. Mayor Eric Adams commented on the suspect's possible connections to nationwide protests.
