In a significant move to protect the rights and safety of migrant workers, over 93,000 labourers from outside Meghalaya have registered under new legislation enacted in the state. The Meghalaya Identification, Registration (Safety and Security) of Migrant Workers Act, 2020, is designed to identify workers and address their welfare needs, according to officials.

The registration drive, which began in 2021, has recorded 93,282 migrant workers as of 2024. East Khasi Hills leads with the highest registration at 41,242, followed by East Jaintia Hills with a tally of 29,932. Other districts like Ri-Bhoi and West Khasi Hills have also contributed significantly to the registration figures, officials noted.

The legislative measure collects a nominal registration fee of Rs 50, amassing Rs 93.28 lakh in fees for 2024. An amendment to the Act recently passed by the state Assembly ramps up penalties for non-compliance from Rs 5,000 to Rs 1 lakh, while a stricter screening mechanism using the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (CCTNS) is now mandatory for workers.
