In a significant move, the Karnataka government, under Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, announced a fresh social and educational survey, popularly known as a caste census, to be conducted over 15 days from September 22 to October 7. The survey aims to eradicate caste discrimination by obtaining detailed data on the socioeconomic status and land ownership of approximately 7 crore residents.
The decision follows a directive from Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, advocating for a revision of the state's backward classes list, as mandated by law once every ten years. The Kantharaju Commission had previously conducted a controversial survey in 2015, which faced criticism for being 'unscientific' by key communities such as the Vokkaligas and Veershaiva-Lingayats.
This time, the survey employs advanced methods, including a mobile app and a high-level committee to ensure a scientific and transparent process. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah emphasized the inclusion of 1.65 lakh enumerators to conduct the survey efficiently, highlighting coordination between different departments to ensure its success.
