The Supreme Court has called upon the Centre and Delhi government to set up dedicated courts specifically for handling cases involving gangsters in the national capital. A bench led by Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi pointed out the existing burden on the courts managing various cases, including those under the IPC, NDPS, and Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
Justice Kant highlighted the inefficiencies in current proceedings, citing a significant gap between the framing of charges and the examination of prosecution witnesses. He stressed the benefits of setting up special courts, akin to fast-track courts, which have successfully expedited convictions for heinous offenses.
Justice Bagchi noted the problematic trend where cases end in bail rather than conviction, pointing toward a lack of prioritization in prosecutions. The court mentioned the pressing situation in Delhi's outskirts, emphasizing the need for better adjudication as a deterrent to criminal activities, underlining the essential role of witness protection to ensure justice.
