Controversy Erupts Over Arms Licences for Indigenous Citizens in Assam

In Assam's Nagaon district, a citizens' group has voiced strong opposition to the state government's recent decision to grant arms licences to indigenous populations. The Nagaon Nagarik Sabha (NNS) held a protest, urging the government to roll back the controversial policy.
On May 28, the Assam Cabinet announced its plan to issue arms licences to indigenous residents in 'vulnerable and remote' regions, aiming to bolster their security. However, NNS Secretary Birinchi Bora criticized the policy, labeling it a distraction from alleged administrative failures.
As the debate intensifies, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has defended the decision, highlighting public demand since the Assam Agitation of 1979-85. Despite skepticism, the government is proceeding with a streamlined process for licence issuance starting in August through a dedicated portal.
