Russia announced on Thursday its control over Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine, after nearly 16 months of intense conflict. The Defense Ministry described the capture as a 'liberation,' opening paths for Russia's further advancement into Ukrainian territories.
While Reuters could not independently verify the claim, DeepState, a Ukrainian mapping site, showed Ukrainian troops still holding parts of western Chasiv Yar. Despite persistent dialogues, ending the 3-1/2 year conflict through a ceasefire remains elusive, with the U.S. indicating potential sanctions against Russia and its trade partners.
Moscow's forces continue exerting pressure on Pokrovsk, located southwest of Chasiv Yar. Military analysts note the defensive advantages of Chasiv Yar's terrain. However, if the town's fall is confirmed, it could facilitate Russia's advance towards Kostiantynivka, complicating Ukraine's logistics and defense strategies in the region.
