Understanding Aadhaar: Identity Beyond Citizenship

Aadhaar, a unique 12-digit identification number, is used as a proof of identity in various sectors. While it's optional during special intensive revision of electoral rolls, it's not a proof of citizenship. The number aids in digital identity for accessing government services and welfare benefits.

In a recent parliamentary session, it was clarified that the Aadhaar number, a 12-digit unique identifier, is used as an optional field for proof of identity during the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. However, it does not serve as proof of citizenship or domicile, the government confirmed.

The Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Jitin Prasada, responding to questions from Trinamool Congress member Sagarika Ghose, emphasized that Aadhaar is primarily a tool for identity verification, not for determining citizenship.

Aadhaar, issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), helps individuals access various government services and welfare benefits efficiently. Despite its widespread use in banking, telecom, and educational sectors, the minister reminded that it should not be mistaken as a document confirming citizenship.
