The Supreme Court directed states on Wednesday to conduct surveys of orphaned children who have been denied education under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009. The move aims to address educational inequalities faced by orphans, often left without necessary support.
A bench comprising Justices B V Nagarathna and K V Viswanathan also urged the central government to incorporate data on orphans in the next national census planned for 2027. This step is seen as pivotal for understanding and addressing the needs of India's orphaned population.
The court acknowledged that some states like Gujarat, Delhi, Meghalaya, and Sikkim already include orphans in the 25% quota for disadvantaged groups in schools. Other states have been advised to follow suit to ensure equitable access to education for all.
