The Kerala government has leveraged a draft ordinance amendment to address ongoing conflicts regarding the appointment of Vice Chancellors at the Digital University Kerala. This approval, made during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, aligns with University Grants Commission guidelines and recent court rulings.
The issue has sparked tension between the Left Democratic Front government and Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. Cabinet members P Rajeev and R Bindhu held discussions with the Governor to seek an amicable resolution, as suggested by recent Supreme Court advice.
In addition to addressing educational governance challenges, the cabinet has decided to enhance the medical insurance scheme, Medisep, extending its basic coverage from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh for state employees and pensioners, as well as expanding the list of treatments covered.
