In a developing legal scenario, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday ordered the temporary suspension of Punjab's new land pooling policy. This decision follows a petition by Gurdeep Singh Gill, raising significant concerns about its compliance and impact on landless laborers.
The court demanded clarity on several points, including rehabilitation provisions for those dependent on land for sustenance, and questioned if a social and environmental impact assessment was conducted. Justices Anupinder Singh Grewal and Deepak Manchanda emphasized compliance with established legal frameworks.
This suspension intensifies the ongoing debate, with opposition parties denouncing the policy as a farmers' exploitation scheme. The AAP government countered these claims, assuring that the policy is designed to benefit the agricultural community without forced acquisitions.
