A 12-year-old boy has been detained for allegedly murdering his grandfather in a dispute over money for a smartphone, police reported on Wednesday.

The incident took place on August 4 in Purani Basti, involving former Indian Army personnel Rampati Pandey, whom the boy reportedly assaulted with an iron rod after a money-related argument.

The boy's friend, 22-year-old Azharuddin, is accused of participating in the attack by using a brick. The retired soldier succumbed to his injuries on site. Both suspects were apprehended by the authorities.
