The Supreme Court has called on the Tamil Nadu government to provide assurance regarding prosecution cases against current or former DMK ministers and lawmakers. The court's directive follows concerns about the withdrawal of charges that were initially sanctioned, but later abandoned.
Justices Surya Kant, Ujjal Bhuyan, and N Kotiswar Singh requested an affidavit in response to a PIL seeking the transfer of ongoing trials against sitting ministers outside the state. The plea argues political bias in the withdrawal of prosecution sanctions.
The bench has given the state government two weeks to file the affidavit, while the petitioner, Chennai-based lawyer Karuppiah Gandhi, claims that political considerations influenced the withdrawal of charges. The court will further review the case on September 17.
