In an effort to tackle the persistent crime issues in Washington, D.C., the White House confirmed on Thursday night that federal law enforcement will have an increased presence in the capital city for at least the next week. The move aligns with President Donald Trump's calls for potentially taking over the city's administration.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized that D.C.'s crime levels necessitate such actions, stating, "Washington, DC is an amazing city, but it has been plagued by violent crime for far too long." The operation is set to start at midnight, led by US Park Police, and aims to have a visible law enforcement presence across the city.
This initiative follows a shocking assault on Edward Coristine, a top government official, which acted as a catalyst for the increased federal intervention. While Mayor Muriel Bowser's government cites decreases in crime rates, President Trump argues more action is necessary, even considering repealing local autonomy or deploying the National Guard.
