In a strategic move, the Congolese government has overhauled its cabinet, now featuring opposition members, in a bid to unify support in regions it controls amidst ongoing conflict. The announcement was made on Thursday via a televised address by government spokesperson, Tina Salama.
The restructured 53-member cabinet sees the inclusion of Adolphe Muzito, a former prime minister under ex-President Joseph Kabila, now serving as vice prime minister for the budget. While the majority of the cabinet remains unchanged, the inclusion aims to foster national unity.
Despite attempts to engage the M23 rebel group for peace talks in Doha, proceedings have stalled with claims of no formal invitations. Tensions persist as more than 100 factions continue to battle in the resource-rich eastern Congo. The rebel-led M23 holds significant territory, complicating peace efforts.
