Unearthing the Shadows: The Mass Graves of Iraq
Iraqi officials are excavating a mass grave near Mosul, believed to contain thousands of bodies, including those of Iraqi military and police personnel, and Yazidis murdered by ISIS. The complex operation involves international support, meticulous DNA collection, and hopes to identify victims of ISIS brutality and provide closure to families.

Iraqi authorities have initiated the excavation of a suspected mass grave near Mosul, attributed to atrocities committed by the Islamic State a decade ago. This operation, assisted by judicial and forensic experts, aims to uncover victims of ISIS's reign of terror.
In cooperation with the Martyrs' Foundation and various forensic bodies, the site at Khasfa is undergoing preliminary examinations. The task includes gathering human remains and evidence from the site, with plans for comprehensive exhumations pending international collaboration due to challenging site conditions.
Estimates suggest thousands of individuals, including military personnel and Yazidis, are buried at Khasfa. Local lawyer Rabah Nouri Attiyah highlights the grave's significance in Iraqi history, expecting the site to contain evidence of ISIS's brutal acts, as families await closure and justice for lost loved ones.
