North East Student Unions Demand Action Against Illegal Immigration

The Naga Students' Federation (NSF) demonstrated on Monday alongside other student groups in the North East, highlighting the need to evict illegal immigrants from the region. The sit-in was conducted under the North East Students' Organisation (NESO), the main representative body for students and youth in the area, at Naga Solidarity Park.

A diverse group of students and leaders from NSF and NESO attended the rally, during which NESO's General Secretary Mutsikhoyo Yhobu and NSF's President Medovi Rhi handed over a memorandum to the state's Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio via Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen. The document expressed deep concerns about illegal immigration, described as a major threat to the region's socio-cultural identity, demographic equilibrium, and political stability.

The memorandum stressed that states like Assam, Tripura, and Meghalaya are facing drastic demographic shifts due to migration, urging swift government action. The groups demanded immediate identification and removal of illegal migrants, sealing of the Indo-Bangladesh border, and strengthening of border security. They also called for measures to safeguard indigenous culture and urged the formation of a Special Review Committee to address population growth in critical areas.
