Under the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and the guidance of Union Minister of Communications and DoNER Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, the Department of Posts (DoP) has successfully completed the nationwide rollout of IT 2.0 – Advanced Postal Technology (APT). This digital leap is a defining step in the modernisation of India Post’s vast network of 1.65 lakh post offices, furthering the government’s goals of Digital India and Make in India.
With APT, India Post reaffirms its role as a technology-driven, citizen-centric service provider while strengthening its legacy of trust and unparalleled reach across the country.
From IT Modernisation 1.0 to APT
Building upon the foundations laid by IT Modernisation Project 1.0, APT has been designed and developed by the Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology (CEPT) using a microservices-based architecture.
The new platform is hosted on the MeghRaj 2.0 cloud of the Government of India and supported by BSNL’s nationwide connectivity, ensuring resilience, scalability, and accessibility even in the most remote rural regions.
Union Minister Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia called APT a landmark reform:
“APT will transform India Post into a world-class public logistics organisation. Led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, this is Aatmanirbhar Bharat in full strength, paving the path for a stronger, self-reliant Digital India.”
Key Features of APT
The APT platform introduces next-generation features that are designed to make postal and financial services faster, more reliable, and inclusive:
-
Micro-services and Open API architecture for scalability and integration.
-
Unified user interface for seamless customer and staff experience.
-
Cloud-ready deployment for resilience.
-
End-to-end digital solutions covering booking to delivery.
-
Next-gen services such as QR-code payments and OTP-based delivery.
-
DIGIPIN – a 10-digit alphanumeric postal code system to enhance accuracy in deliveries.
-
Open Network system ensuring uninterrupted connectivity, even in rural areas.
-
Enhanced analytics and reporting for better operational insights.
Nationwide Rollout and Training
Following a successful pilot in the Karnataka Postal Circle (May–June 2025), the phased rollout extended to all 23 postal circles, culminating on 4th August 2025 with over 1.70 lakh offices, including mail offices and administrative units, going live.
Recognising the importance of workforce readiness, India Post trained 4.6 lakh employees through a cascade training model that included Master Trainers, User Champions, and End-Users under the principle of “Train – Retrain – Refresh.” This ensured smooth adoption across the vast organisation.
Proven Scalability and Impact
The APT system has already shown remarkable resilience, successfully handling:
-
32 lakh bookings in a single day
-
37 lakh deliveries in a single day
These figures demonstrate the platform’s robustness and scalability, ensuring uninterrupted citizen services even under high demand.
Strengthening India’s Digital Transformation
The rollout of IT 2.0 not only modernises India Post but also strengthens its role in:
-
Bridging the rural–urban digital divide
-
Enhancing financial inclusion through digital services
-
Supporting e-commerce and logistics growth
-
Promoting indigenous technological innovation under Make in India
By aligning postal modernisation with the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, APT ensures that India Post continues to be a pillar of public service delivery in the digital age.
With the successful launch of IT 2.0, India Post has positioned itself as a world-class logistics and financial service provider, seamlessly blending its trusted legacy with modern technology. The initiative underscores the dedication of its workforce, the government’s commitment to digital empowerment, and India’s drive toward a more inclusive, efficient, and self-reliant future.
