Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has called on opposition parties to rethink their opposition to the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill, arguing it serves to bolster public confidence in democratic systems. He emphasized that the bill's critics have misunderstood its intent, asserting it poses no risk to elected governments.
Introduced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the Lok Sabha, the controversial bill proposes the removal of key government figures, such as the prime minister or chief ministers, if arrested on grave charges for more than 30 days. This initiative has incited intense protests from opposition members, who argue it undermines the Constitution's principles and federal unity.
Sarma contended that the bill is designed to reinforce moral values in governance, with provisions for detained ministers to contest their custody legally within a month. Despite opposition backlash, supporters claim the bill is a necessary step toward maintaining integrity in public offices.
