In a landmark step towards prioritising worker welfare, Union Minister of Coal and Mines Shri G. Kishan Reddy today launched three major initiatives for Coal India Limited (CIL) employees: a new corporate uniform, the Corporate Salary Package (CSP), and enhanced ex-gratia benefits for mine workers. Together, these measures underscore the government’s and Coal India’s shared commitment to dignity, safety, and financial security for India’s coal workforce.

Strengthening Worker Welfare under “We Care”

Aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Workers First” and “Workers’ Welfare”, these initiatives mark a comprehensive approach to address the multiple needs of coal workers—from identity and safety to financial security and social protection.

As part of the “We Care” initiative, Coal India has increased ex-gratia benefits for mine accident fatalities from ₹15 lakh to ₹25 lakh. This enhanced support applies equally to both regular and contract workers. The compensation will be delivered directly to the families of the deceased, ensuring transparency and timeliness in assistance.

While the company continues to pursue its “Zero Harm” mission in mines, the enhanced ex-gratia reaffirms Coal India’s commitment to compassion and solidarity, standing firmly by families affected by workplace tragedies.

Corporate Salary Package: Financial Security for All

A central highlight of the announcement was the launch of the Corporate Salary Package (CSP), introduced under the tagline: “Suraksha Har Karmchaari Ki – United in Security, Empowered for the Future.”

The CSP is designed as a forward-looking financial security net for coal workers, offering comprehensive coverage without any premium contribution from employees. Key features include:

  • ₹1 crore insurance cover for regular employees.

  • ₹40 lakh insurance cover for contract workers.

  • 2.15 lakh regular employees and 44,000 contract workers already enrolled.

  • Seamless banking services through MoUs with ten leading public sector banks and the Chhattisgarh State Gramin Bank.

This welfare-oriented package ensures that every coal worker and their family enjoys access to modern banking facilities and social protection, free from additional financial burden.

A New Uniform: Identity, Unity, and Pride

Alongside financial initiatives, the Minister also launched a new uniform for Coal India employees. More than just attire, the uniform is meant to foster:

  • A shared identity across the organisation.

  • A professional and safety-oriented culture in mines and offices.

  • A renewed sense of pride, dignity, and belonging among employees.

From underground mines and open-cast operations to administrative offices, the uniform will serve as a symbol of unity across Coal India’s diverse workforce, reinforcing cohesion and discipline.

Setting New Benchmarks in Worker-Centric Policies

These initiatives reflect Coal India’s broader strategy of aligning with national goals of inclusive growth, energy security, and workforce dignity. By integrating social protection, financial empowerment, and identity-building, Coal India is setting new benchmarks in employee welfare and industrial relations.

Shri G. Kishan Reddy praised the efforts, stating that these measures ensure India’s energy backbone remains strong, secure, and motivated:

“Coal workers are at the heart of India’s energy security. It is our duty to ensure their safety, dignity, and welfare are protected as much as their contributions are valued.”

Looking Ahead

Coal India’s initiatives come at a time when the energy sector is undergoing major transformation with an increased emphasis on worker safety, technology integration, and welfare reforms. By strengthening support systems for its employees, Coal India is reaffirming its role not only as the country’s largest coal producer but also as a model for worker-first policies in the public sector.
