Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Scott Simpson is travelling to London this week to advance New Zealand’s international partnerships in insurance, emergency preparedness, and business competition, while also engaging in a range of cultural and diplomatic events that reflect the depth of the New Zealand–United Kingdom relationship.

Focus on Resilience and Disaster Preparedness

Minister Simpson said the visit comes at a crucial time, with climate change and global instability driving the need for stronger collaboration on risk management and recovery strategies.

“Resilience and disaster recovery are central priorities for this Government. My visit to London is an opportunity to promote New Zealand’s leadership in these areas and to build stronger ties with global partners who share our challenges and ambitions,” Simpson stated.

Strengthening Insurance and Market Links

While in London, Simpson will meet with major insurance and competition stakeholders, including:

  • The Insurance Council of New Zealand – providing industry perspectives on shared challenges in disaster cover and resilience planning.

  • Aon – one of the world’s leading risk and insurance advisors, where discussions will centre on innovative risk transfer solutions.

  • Lloyd’s of London – the world’s oldest insurance market, renowned for its expertise in complex global risks.

  • The UK Competition and Markets Authority – a key regulator overseeing fair trading, market competition, and consumer protection.

These meetings aim to strengthen New Zealand’s capacity to respond to disasters, ensure affordability and access in insurance markets, and learn from global best practices in competition policy.

Diplomatic and Cultural Engagements

Beyond economic discussions, the Minister’s visit also includes high-profile diplomatic and cultural events. He will receive a detailed briefing at the New Zealand High Commission in London, where officials will provide updates on bilateral cooperation, trade ties, and international regulatory developments.

Simpson will also attend the 85th Anniversary Battle of Britain Service and Reception, commemorating the historic role of the Royal Air Force and the enduring bonds between New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Supporting New Zealand on the World Stage

In a show of support for New Zealand sport on the global stage, Simpson will join Kiwi fans in cheering on the Black Ferns during their Women’s Rugby World Cup semi-final against Canada. This reflects the Government’s ongoing commitment to backing New Zealand teams as ambassadors for the country’s culture and values abroad.

Strengthening UK–NZ Relations

The visit highlights the wide-ranging nature of New Zealand’s partnership with the United Kingdom, covering not only trade and financial resilience but also defence history, culture, and sport.

Minister Simpson will be in London from 17–21 September, with the Government expecting the visit to contribute to both stronger economic security and deeper people-to-people ties.
