A 48-year-old trader's lifeless body was retrieved from the Mej river in the early hours of Thursday, police reported, following an accident where his SUV plunged into the water. The mishap took place the previous evening near a poorly maintained bridge.
According to Station House Officer Subash Sharma, trader Harish Khandelwal from Siswali town was unaware of the unmarked boundary of the bridge, lacking railings and lighting, causing the vehicle to slip off-road and into the river around 7:15 PM. The vehicle was later located around 2 AM, submerged in about 20 feet of water, and recovered by crane an hour later.
The tragic incident revived memories of a fatal crash at the same spot, where a bus carrying a wedding party fell into the river in 2020, leading to 24 deaths. Khandelwal's body was released to his family post-postmortem.
