Tensions Mount Over Cyprus' Defence Upgrades as Turkey Watches Closely

Turkey is closely monitoring developments in Cyprus, specifically moves that could potentially disrupt the current balance on the divided island. A Turkish official disclosed concerns on Thursday, following reports that Cyprus had acquired an air defense system from Israel.

The island of Cyprus remains split since a 1974 Turkish invasion occurred after a Greek-inspired coup. While the south is internationally recognized, the north is controlled by a Turkish Cypriot state known only to Ankara. Cypriot media indicated that an Israeli Barak MX system is set to eventually replace older Russian models, stirring tensions amidst ongoing disputes.
