In a notable legal development, the Centre on Thursday informed the Supreme Court that stepmothers are not eligible for family pension under Indian Air Force rules. The pension, deemed a right rather than a benefit, only applies to biological mothers.
The issue arose from a plea by Jayashree Y Jogi, who raised her stepson after his biological mother's passing. Her son, an airman, died under mysterious circumstances in 2008. Despite her role in his upbringing, the Armed Forces Tribunal denied her the special family pension.
The Centre, represented by Additional Solicitor General K M Nataraj, cited Pension Regulations, showing stepmothers aren't classified among eligible dependents. The Supreme Court will review the matter on November 20.
