Senior advocate Nirmal K Kotwal has withdrawn from the legal defense team representing AAP MLA Mehraj Malik, who is detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA). Kotwal cited Malik's 'insensitive and irresponsible' social media remarks challenging national security and integrity as the reason for his decision.

The Aam Aadmi Party has assembled a 10-member legal team to contest Malik's detention, following his arrest on September 8 in Doda for alleged disruption of public order. Malik's detention led to violent protests, prompting authorities to implement prohibitory measures, including an internet shutdown.

Kotwal stressed his commitment to national unity and sovereignty as paramount, indicating that Malik's reported statements regarding Jammu and Kashmir's status and support for militant figures were unacceptable. AAP remains steadfast in its support for Malik, as announced by senior leader Imran Hussain on social media.
