The Sexual Trafficking Identification Matrix (STIM), a new analytical tool developed at the University of Sheffield, is proving instrumental in helping police forces across the UK identify potential human trafficking victims through online adult service ads.
Created by Dr. Xavier L'Hoiry, STIM has been adopted by 16 police forces and two charities in the UK, and law enforcement agencies globally. The tool evaluates online adverts for trafficking risks by examining photographs, language, and other details, enabling swift investigation prioritization.
Detective Chief Inspector Ben Henley from Thames Valley Police, a leader in STIM's implementation, reports significant outcomes, including safeguarding numerous individuals and initiating criminal investigations. The project, involving collaborations with various international partners, addresses the challenge of trafficker activity on digital platforms.
