The Bengaluru police have successfully recovered Rs 14 lakh in a cyber scam where BJP Chikkaballapura MP K Sudhakar's wife, Preeti, was targeted through what is known as 'digital arrest'. This method involves impersonators posing as police officials in WhatsApp video calls.
The incident occurred on August 26, when Preeti received a threatening call from fraudsters claiming to be from the Mumbai Cyber Crime Police. They alleged illegal transfers from her account, prompting her to send money for verification, promising returns within 45 minutes. Failure to comply, they warned, would lead to her arrest.
By acting swiftly, Preeti lodged a complaint with the police and the National Cyber Helpline within the critical 'Golden Hour', enabling the police to freeze the fraudulent account. Ultimately, a court order directed the return of her funds. Authorities urge the public to report scams immediately to prevent losses.
