Indonesian rescue teams have begun using heavy machinery to clear significant debris from a collapsed school in Sidoarjo, as hopes of finding nearly 60 missing students dwindle three days after the tragedy.

Despite the absence of life signs beneath the ruins, the decision, announced by Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs Pratikno, was made in consultation with families of the missing.

The incident, which occurred at the century-old al Khoziny Islamic boarding school, resulted from an unauthorized construction extension. So far, five fatalities have been confirmed, with rescue efforts proceeding cautiously amid diminishing survival prospects.
