On Friday, employees of the 102 and 108 ambulance services held a strike and led a protest march in Hamirpur. They targeted the Medswan Foundation, responsible for the ambulance operations under the National Health Mission, accusing the organization of exploiting workers.
According to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU)-affiliated Ambulance Employees Union, the foundation has been denying them minimum wages and forcing them to work for 12-hour shifts without overtime compensation. Despite taking their grievances to court and labor authorities, no resolution has been achieved, stated CITU national secretary Kashmir Singh Thakur, expressing dissatisfaction with the response of authorities.
Union president Rajesh Kumar highlighted additional grievances such as unpaid termination allowances and flouting of labor laws. He termed the one-day strike as a strong reminder of their ongoing struggle for fair treatment, following the termination of services previously handled by GVK EMRI company.
