Karnataka CM Defends Caste Census Amid Ongoing Debates

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reiterated the importance of the ongoing caste census, dismissing criticisms as misleading. Addressing the press on Monday, he noted that the survey is essential for understanding the social and financial demographics of the state.

Conducted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes, the survey aims to gather comprehensive data on the societal roles, employment, and educational statuses of individuals. Though some argue the survey targets upper classes, Siddaramaiah refuted such claims, advocating for the creation of an egalitarian society.

The CM remained non-committal on the deadline extension for the survey, currently achieving a 63% coverage. On the Lingayat community's demand for separate religious status, Siddaramaiah stated that the survey will document whatever identity the people declare.
