Long Shadow of the Past: Shabir Shah's Arrest in 1996 Terror Case

Separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah was taken into custody by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Srinagar in relation to a decades-old terror case. Shah's arrest pertains to a 1996 incident involving an attack on police during a militant's funeral. He was subsequently brought before the Patiala House Court in Delhi.

The court approved a three-day transit remand for Shah, enabling the NIA to transfer him to a special court in Jammu. On Saturday, the special NIA court sanctioned a 10-day custodial interrogation to allow further investigation into the 1996 terror attack.

Shah, who is 72 years old, had recently been granted bail after almost seven years behind bars. The Supreme Court granted him bail in a terror-funding case earlier this year, alongside a Delhi court which approved bail in a money laundering case.
