Assam CM Faces Court Over Alleged Hate Speech

The Gauhati High Court has been assured by the Assam government that it will file a response to public interest litigations accusing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of delivering hate speech. The court has scheduled the hearing for May 28.
Filed by renowned figures including Sahitya Akademi awardee Hiren Gohain, the PILs allege that Sarma's statements could foster societal division. Despite a Supreme Court suggestion to expedite proceedings, no FIR has been registered against Sarma by the state authorities.
The petitioners claim that Sarma used derogatory language towards Bengali-origin Muslims, calling for social and economic boycotts, and promoting harmful stereotypes. They demand an investigation led by a Special Investigation Team to address the issue.
