Pope Leo Emphasizes Unity Over Formalizing Same-Sex Blessings
Pope Leo has reinforced the stance of his predecessor, Francis, by resisting further formalization of blessings for same-sex couples within the Catholic Church to maintain unity. He emphasized broader issues of morality beyond sexual ethics, highlighting justice, equality, and freedom in church teachings.
Pope Leo signaled on Thursday that he would maintain the status quo concerning Church blessings for same-sex couples, emphasizing that taking further steps could jeopardize Catholic unity.
On a flight back to Rome after an African tour, Leo praised Francis' groundbreaking 2023 decision that allowed informal blessings for same-sex couples but reiterated the Vatican's stance against formalization of such blessings.
Leo stressed that unity in the Church shouldn't be confined to sexual ethics, advocating for broader moral issues like justice and equality to be at the forefront of Catholic discussions.
